4 Stars It’ll make you want to skip fast food for the rest of your life! (if not eating all together…)
This unusual quasi-documentary takes you on a gastronomical journey into the world of McDonalds food and its effects on the human body. Imagine eating nothing but McDonalds fast-food for an entire month, and whenever you are asked if you want to “super-size it” you are obligated to do so and to eat the whole meal! That’s the premis of one man’s personal experiment shown on this movie.

Come along as you see the effects of a constant, unrestricted McDonalds diet on a healthy man’s body.

The film making is not particularly good, and the acting (such as it is – not really acting by an actor) is adequate, but the results and message are stunning! Our fast-food diet habits (among other things) are producing an unhealthily obese population – one that we are actually exporting as soon as we can get other nations to buy into it.

Watching this film may well be one of the best diet supplements out there.

I was simultaneously attracted and repulsed by what I saw, kind of like rubber-necking as you drive past a serious automobile accident, but this is no accident, and it affects all of us.

I think that the entire nation should take a good look at this movie, its message, and then get decide to step off of the fast-food merry-go-round (and rounder, and rounder!).

FYI – You should be prepared for a smattering of language and some dialog that may not be suitable for children.

5 stars for the message and 3 stars for the movie quality, resulting in a 4-star overall rating!

2 Stars Great Movie To Watch At The Beginning Of A Healthier Diet But…
Wow, this movie is a must see for people who don’t know that fat is unattractive and bad for their health, McDonald’s food is fattening especially if eaten in very large quantities and large corporations like McDonalds don’t really care about their customers and are just out to make money! For the rest of us who were fortunate enough to all ready have this knowledge, SUPER SIZE ME really is an unnecessary movie useful perhaps,as a motivator while beginning or in the midst of a healthier eating lifestyle. The movie is very heavy handed in pounding the rather obvious point that a steady diet of McDonlds is not good. And is there a law that documentary filmmakers who are the subjects of their own films have to be insufferably smug and obnoxious? If so Morgan Spurlock fulfills this law to a nicety with some help from his vegan chef girlfriend who in a cringe inducing manner has to tell us more than we could ever want to know about her boyfriend’s sex life on the Micky D diet. And though McDonald’s may exploit and addict their overweight customers, Spurlock is also quite cruel to the obese with his lingering shots of their midsections and rears. Spurlock briefly discusses the problems with fast food restaurants in general but McDonalds is obviously his main target.

3 Stars Good, sometimes manipulative
Manipulative documentary in the vein of the Michael Moore pieces. Sure it has a noble mission, but beyond offering factoids about nutrition and the guy’s 30-day weight gain experiment and the type of crap corporate America offering people to eat (nobody is forcing people to eat fries from the caf every day, but how many people really take bagged lunches to work?) it doesn’t offer too much. Naturally, the documentary maker’s vegetarian girlfriend is given screen time to preach about how wrong it is to eat junk food.

Taking the moral high ground – check. Throwing up after eating a huge fast food meal – check. Waiting it out until a corporate spokesman says something embarassing, then capitalising on the soundbite – check. Giving the impression of impartiality by showing a guy who eats a Big Mac every day (without fries) but is not overweight or suffering from poor nutrition – check.

Of course he deals briefly with the stupidity of people who are overweight and still eat regularly at these kinds of places, but it would have been more interesting to me if the whole movie had focussed on this. Now THAT would have been a funny “documentary.”

3 Stars Not shocking!
I thought this documentary was well done, even if the deck was stacked. Yes folks, if you eat fast food for 30 days 3x a day you will become seriously ill. I don’t think it is fair to pick on McDonalds, there are many fast food companies and they are all spending lots of dough to get your attention. Growing up, my mother always cooked home made, and I mean nearly from scratch. I attribute that to being healthy, and having an appreciation for home-made spaghetti, beef stroganoff, tacos, fish- twice a week (a few of my favorites) and our dinners always included a veggie (introduce veggies young and kids will eat them, maybe really like them), we almost never had a dessert, and by dessert I mean peaches and cottage cheese… (funny how I’ve as an adult never cared for dessert!)Why do I mention this? Growing up this way gave me an appreciation for really good food. I was spoiled rotten by my mom, and grandma who are both excellent cooks. We rarely ate fast food, and when we did it was a special treat…not a way of life.

When as parents we “feed” our children responsibly, hopefully they will grow to incorporate those responsible ideals. This idea can be applied anywhere. Some have posted comments that childrens’ cereal is purposely shelved at a height where kids can see it…they are little guys ;) Who buys the cereal? Who plans the meals?

One point I would like to make about Super Size Me: After viewing I’ve not been able to eat a chicken McNugget since. (I do get a craving for a Big Mac though) My son, who watched the documentary with me (he is 9) still finds them tasty. So much for opening his eyes, he doesn’t care that it’s old chicken. Than again he loves sushi…not regularly served at our house.

People please stop blaming Corporations, schools, Government! It all starts at home…

maybe with home-cooking :)

5 Stars Super Size Me, Indeed.
My wife and I watched the “Super Size Me” DVD last night. It was the third time we watched it and we enjoyed it very much. Let’s face it, Fast Food is a major facet of the American Culture. It’s everywhere. Within five miles of our house there are “McDonalds” (2), “Jack in the Box”(3), “Karl’s Jr.” (2), “Wendy’s”(2), “Rubio’s,” “Burger King,” “Arby’s,” “El Polo Loco,” “Taco Bell,” “KFC,” “Subway”(4) and about a half-dozen local Mexican Taco Shops. No matter what road you take, there’s fast food readily available. Yum. Some of it is actually quite good and I confess to eating at some of the places now and then. My personal favorites are “El Polo Loco,” “Subway” and a couple of the Mexican Taco Shops. Actually, if you know what you’re doing, you can get a reasonably healthful meal. And, of course, it’s real fast and oh so convenient. The trick is that you shouldn’t do it too often. Did I mention that it’s real fast and convenient? Did I mention that some of the items are rather good and tasty? Did I mention that the food is so easily available and inexpensive?

The problem is, as I see it, most people have no idea what they’re doing. The nutritional knowledge of the average American is practically nil. They select almost exclusively on taste and they are greatly swayed by the ubiquitous advertising. Furthermore, they’re always rushed and need something that can be grabbed and consumed quickly. If you’re such a person, and that’s most of us, you probably aren’t paying real close attention and you’re going to end up with food that is very high in fat, sugars and sodium, none of which are particularly good for you, and you’ll be very low in vitamins and fiber. The next question might be, How often do you do this? Once a month? Once a week? Every day? Almost all the time? Well, I think you’re entering into a situation where you’re going to be ill some of the time, much of the time or all of the time. Best of luck.

We try to avoid fast food as much as possible and be highly selective when we indulge. It’s a tough task. We almost never go into McDonald’s, except for coffee which is actually quite good. Go figure. Well, “Super Size Me” picks on McDonald’s and the attack is pretty devastating. It’s a lot of fun, also. I love this movie. The jist of it is that Morgan Spurlock decides to eat exclusively at McDonald’s for a month. Every day. Every meal. Even water. He is monitored by three doctors and a nutritionist and they record his progressive and dramatic deterioration. By the time he’s halfway through his experiment, he’s already in serious trouble with warnings from his doctors. At the end of the month, his blood pressure is high, his cholesterol is high and he’s gained 24.5 pounds, among other things. It’s really eye opening, and Spurlock is a fun character to watch. It’s a fun movie to watch, but it’s deadly serious. Let’s face it, this is a film that should be required viewing for all people who indulge in fast food. We’ve watched several times, and every time our intake of fast foods is down dramatically over the next six months.

5 Stars excellent for everyone
This is possibly the best exercise DVD I’ve ever used. It is very customizable. Also, BOB shows you other ways to do the more high impact exercises so you don’t do more than you can. He really makes a point of keeping your heart rate up and lets you know how you should be feeling at any given time so you can amp it up or cut back if needed. If you are only buying one exercise DVD, this is the one you should get, you’ll get everything you need from it.

3 Stars NOT for everyone
I have degenerative and weight-related knee problems and was unable to use this video due to the excessive amount of side-to-side work. I had, wrongly, figured that a Biggest Loser workout would be adapted for plus-size people and their associated limitations.

If you do not have joint problems this would be a good beginner to intermediate workout.

4 Stars Gets you going
I was pleasantly surprised. I am no stranger to workout videos, as this is my preferred method of keeping in shape. I’m a busy mom of 2 (1 infant) and a full time student.

I’m kind of new to the high intensity cardio moves in this dvd. I’ve been doing Pilates (Denise Austin & 10 minute Solutions), walking (Leslie Sansone videos), and rollerblading for the last several years. I have always maintained a beautiful figure with Pilates. I’m 27 and just had my second child about 2 months ago. After my 1st child, the weight melted off of me in no time at all with just walking. 6 years later, I popped in my Pilates dvds with doctor’s ok to resume exercising but just didn’t see the results as I did before. I borrowed this DVD from a friend and started with the boot camp segment. I was NOT prepared for ALL THE JUMPING! I must say, though, after the initial shock and realization that I had a long way to go, I came to look forward to my progress: if I could keep up with the jumping, I knew I was moving in the right direction.

I’m not fat by any stretch- 5’4″ & 128 lbs (formerly 132 prior to starting the Biggest Loser regime) I got rid of about 4 lbs in 2 weeks – Not bad. I’m still working out every day with it. I feel MUCH STRONGER. The first to shape up were my buns & thighs, which was very motivating. I can button my pre-pregnancy size 2 jeans.

The benefits of this workout for me are that I feel stronger, and I have more energy- a big plus for a mom of 2. I am getting toned in no time at all. I am now on par with the subculture of people who are maintaining physical fitness, and it feels great!

I enjoy the customizing aspect: warm up, high intensity cardio, sculpting, & cool down.

My other favorite combo is warm up, bootcamp, cool down.

The workouts are very challenging to me. I am not a “sweater” even while rollerblading on the hottest of New Orleans summer days, so I know that when I have sweat rolling down my face I am busting my butt. I’ve never seen the show and had just heard of this in passing. Now I am going to buy my own dvd!

BONUS: There is an intro to trainer & cast segment that I watch occasionally for motivation. I just love to hear the stories of the others and to see their before and after. I love the real people on the videos huffin’ & puffin.’ Bob is also very encouraging.

5 Stars The Biggest Loser The Workout-The Best!
This is the one of the best workouts I have done in a long time. I use to do Billy Banks-Taebo when I used to work out regularly. He is good but so fast paced. Now that I have gained some weight and want to work out again this is an excellent choice. Bob Harper is so motivational and seems to really care about keeping up with the work out. If you haven’t work out in a while and what to do something that works and is fun, I recommend this DVD!

2 Stars the biggest loser
while this is a good excercise, it is very hard on old knees. I had to quit after 6 days as my knees were so sore that they wolud barely bend.

2 Stars not my favorite
I did not enjoy this workout at all. It says beginners and I guess I need an easier one than this. Or Yoga just isn’t for me.

5 Stars Great workout
This is awesome workout! Not ease my arms and legs are burning every time! But I promise it will get better and you will feel and look better too!I love it! It makes me feel stronger every day!

5 Stars Surprisingly challenging!
I’m relatively new to yoga, but wanted to add it to my workout regimen. I work out at least four times a week with cardio and weights, and I was surprised how challenging this video was! The instructor gave clear instruction, the moves were easy to follow, but by the end of the first workout, I was sweating and my muscles were screaming!

This will be a regular addition to my fitness routine for sure! I enjoyed it, I felt the burn, and afterwards, felt like I accomplished something.

5 Stars Love this DVD!
This is a great DVD for yoga lovers and Biggest Loser Fans alike! I got this two days ago and have done level one and two each of those days. This dvd will have your muscles shaking and your body sweating in a good way. Definitely challenging, definitely will make you sweat (yes, even with yoga), and will definitely produce results. The atmosphere is upbeat and not boring for those who don’t like the traditional yoga intruction (soft music, soft voice, soothing background).

Level one seems more geared to upper and lower body with planks, down dog, and deep warrior moves.

Level two is “pilates/yoga” abs and also gives the arms a good workout (especially after doing level one) has plank, boat, bridge, and swimmer moves.

Level three, I haven’t done yet but can’t wait to advance to.

This is a great DVD to put in your rotation. I also recomend Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred, BL CardioMax, and BL PowerSculpt.

5 Stars This is perfect for beginners!
Anyone who watches the biggest loser can tell you that Bob is no easy trainer, but this video is so good for people like me that wanted to try yoga for the first time. It is very easy to follow, starting with a 5 min. warm up, and 3 different levels, and a 5 min. cool down. Each of the yoga levels shows you a “modified” way of yoga for beginners and for those more advanced, Bob will show you a different, more advanced way. I was truely surprised at myself that I was able to do it. It gives you a great workout and I love watching the past biggest losers doing yoga along with me. If you have never tried yoga and want to, try this video!

Requiem for a Dream Directors Cut

5 Stars Perhaps the most disturbing movie I’ve seen.
This is absolutely beautiful . . . and devastating. It shows four characters trying to find meaning in their lives, trying to find love in their lives . . . but succumbing more and more to their addictions and delusions. There is hope all the while, and you can see it, while they can’t. It’s absolutely excruciating to watch, and I think I’m one of the few people willing to watch it more than once. This wasn’t just a good movie. It was a work of art. The book is just as good, although the author’s writing style is extremely unconventional and can be hard to follow at times. He (Hubert Selby) helped make this movie, too. It’s one of those rare cases where the movie is just as good as the book.

Watch it . . . and you will be devastated . . . but you’ll also feel like it was worth it.

Also some of the most beautiful and melancholy music I’ve ever heard in a film.

4 Stars Fantastic Journey
One of Aronofsky’s best movies and certainly a movie that should make its way into anybody’s collection.

4 Stars watch it.
well i did just write something like a 300 word review and it was deleted. so here’s my new one. Requiem= an absolutely amazing movie. It’s the best drug movie out there. If you liked either Trainspotting or Pi, watch this. If you liked Requiem, you should like either of those. By watching this movie you’ll learn more about yourself and hopefully feel better about your life. Make sure though that you are at least of age because the themes in this movie are very provocative and possibly offending. So just watch it.

2 Stars “Drugs are bad, mmkay. You shouldn’t do drugs, mmkay”
There is a lot of aesthetically pleasing and artistic camera and story work in this movie, but ultimately it comes off as an R-rated after-school special.

It’s not a matter of not liking sad stories. There are plenty of tragic tales that peak everyone’s interest (Shakespeare anybody?) but this one has such a blunt-force trauma aspect that it’s difficult to take it seriously. It says, “here are some people who do drugs and every conceivable absolutely horrid thing that can happen to them amplified.”

Perhaps the DVD cover should read, “Abandon all hope, ye who enter.”

5 Stars Unique Style. Graphic Reality. Good Movie.
This is a really good movie. Ever since my first time seeing it two years ago, I wanted to buy it. It isn’t for everybody but it is a classic. I like the way it uses the music in the movie and seems to have a good soundtrack. It uses different camera styles, repetitions, and strong emotional scenes to really make the audience feel way the characters feel. Yes, this is a serious movie even though Marlon Wayans is in it and he gives a good performance. For those who don’t know, “requiem” is a song of mourning composed or performed as a memorial, usually for a dead person. The title makes more sense after seeing the movie and knowing this definition. Sometimes the repetition can get to you but it does make you remember it. You may not want to see every part of it but you will not be able to turn away. The final 10-20 minutes are very intense and emotional. I have only seen this movie while in my 20s as I am now and only with people in their 20s so I can’t say how an older group of people will see this movie but I think most 20-30 yr olds who like drama and are open to looking at the plight of addicts/dealers will like this movie.

5 Stars Great workout
These exercises are fun to do and each one is only done for a min. or two, so there’s alot of variety. They are not too hard and they work on every part of your body. Kundalini yoga is a safe and fun way to get back in shape and really helps to bring your mind and body together for a better you. I highly recommend this video to anyone looking for a fun way to lose weight.

5 Stars Lower Back – Blessed Relief
After only four times following the DVD two times a week, I have relief from chronic lower back pain. Over a year ago, I injured my lower back with the result being torn muscles and ligaments. Physical therapy helped initially but did not rid me of the constant pain. The exercises I did at physical therapy sometimes made me feel worse. Someone had mentioned to me about doing yoga so I looked it up on amazon.com and found Ravi & Ana’s “Fat Free Yoga” with many positive reviews. I believe with time, if I do not recover fully, it will be pretty darn close to full recovery! I have yet to lose weight after doing the DVD about six times but do notice my spine/body starting to realign and I “look” slimmer and my clothes are fitting better. Ravi and Ana have my eternal gratitude!

5 Stars energising
This exercise dvd is fun and gives great results and exercises the mind and spirit as well as the body. I have lost a few pounds and feel great. It lifts the mood and gives a sense of revitalisation and optimism. The moves are simple but quite hard work but Ravi is encouraging in a low key way so it is easy to persevere. The moves stimulate the glands , organs and metabolism, a great over all workout.

5 Stars Fat free Yoga
This was not the yoga that I expected, but it really works! I just do the

one or two segments 4-5 times a week. I feel my body is toned, firmed already…in only 2 weeks. I was really surprised, and highly recommends to everyone!

5 Stars This DVD can completely change your outlook on life!
I decided to write this review after an email response from Ana and Ravi. They were very accessible and gave useful and loving advice. I have had this DVD for about 6 months, and am currently rotating this DVD with 3 others by Ana Brett and Ravi Singh (Yoga Beauty Body, Yoga Quick Fixes and Dr. Yoga House Call. I am also anxiously awaiting one of their new DVDs!). I love all these DVD’s but if I have 90 minutes for yoga, this is the one I will always choose. I am still fairly new to yoga, but I am able to do the exercises on all of these DVD’s. Having said that, I do not think the level is too easy either. This style of yoga seems unique in that the exercises appear simple on the surface, but almost magically give you results that you may not even expect. The most noticeable effect for me was my drastic improvement in the way I have been able to deal with stress. I am currently working as a research scientist, and work can get stressful and chaotic. I used to get stressed and negative at work almost everyday. Now I am able to truly focus on what I want to accomplish and what I need to do to be happy. After doing this yoga I have found myself able to avoid many situations that involve negative conversations, including gossip. I have also become much more focused on finding my true purpose. I strongly believe that regular practice with Kundalini yoga can help you focus your mind in such a way that you will be able to make your dreams concrete. I have become so inspired and intrigued by Kundalini yoga, that I am hoping to incorporate this into my research on cognitive function!

I highly recommend this DVD, as well as any of the other DVDs mentioned in this review. I also recommend visiting their website ([...])to join their mailing list and also look at their workshop schedule. I have attended two of their workshops, and they are even better in person! Get ready to have a smile on your face!
